D. R. Harting
(formerly the Experimental Techniques “Outstanding Paper” Award)
Darrell R. Harting, a 37-year SEM member and one of Experimental Techniques founders, passed away in 1996. In recognition of his considerable contributions to SEM as a member, as its President in 1977-1978, as Fellow in 1983, and as an early proponent of Experimental Techniques, the SEM Honors Committee recommended, and the Executive Board approved, that the E/T Outstanding Paper Award be renamed the D.R. Harting Award.This award was formally established in 1987 by the Executive Board. However, the award was first presented in 1981, when Experimental Techniques started publication on a regular basis. The award, consisting of a plaque, is presented at SEM’s Spring Conference. Candidates are nominated by E/T reviewers who cite papers they consider worthy of “Outstanding Paper” status. In January of the year, the E/T Senior Technical Editor prepares a list of nominated papers. Subsequently, all pertinent information is submitted to the Honors Committee for the final selection.
For the outstanding paper entitled “A Technique for Comparing Wall Pressure Distributions in Steady Flow Through Rigid Versus Flexible Patient-based Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Phantoms” published in Experimental Techniques in 2016 (40:1187)
Dr. Robert Peattie currently serves as a research professor in the Department of Surgery of Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Peattie received a B.S. degree in Biology from Trinity College in 1979, and a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in 1988. He then spent a year at Johns Hopkins as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Previously, he has held faculty appointments at Tulane University, the University of Connecticut, Trinity College and Oregon State University. In 2001, he served as Visiting Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Utah. He has published over 150 journal manuscripts, book chapters, monographs and conference proceedings, and currently serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Critical Reviews in Biomedical Engineering.
Rio S. Nomoto, MD received an undergraduate degree in biology (with college honors) from the College of the Holy Cross and her MD from Tufts University School of Medicine. She has engaged in various projects involving modeling of biological processes including 3-dimensional reconstruction of abdominal aortic aneurysms with Robert Peattie, PhD and Mark Iafrati, MD and small β-sheet mimics in an organic chemistry laboratory with Brian Linton, PhD. She is currently in a surgery residency program at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr Iafrati is an associate professor of Surgery and chief of vascular surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Dr Iafrati heads the collaborative multispecialty vascular research group at Tufts. Areas of particular research interest include Aortic Aneurysms, advanced venous disease, and wound healing. Dr Iafrati has authored 69 Peer reviewed Journal articles and 16 Text Book chapters.
Professor Dorfmann has appointments in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, both at Tufts University. His research interests are in solid and experimental mechanics.
The objective of the current research is to advance knowledge and understanding in the area of biomechanics, with particular emphasis on the development of constitutive laws (mathematical models of material behavior) for soft biological tissues and engineered materials, functional constructs at the macroscopic level and their components at the cellular and molecular levels. Another major interest is the behavior of materials that rapidly change their mechanical properties by the application of an external electric or magnetic field. He is interested in constitutive models, which account for the finite deformation of highly deformable materials in the presence of an electromagnetic field and for the strong nonlinear coupling between electromagnetic and mechanical effects.
