SEM President John Lambros tasked the SEM Strategic Planning Ad-Hoc Committee to develop a series of bullet points, preferably prioritized by importance, with brief explanations/descriptions for each one, within each of three categories:
  1. High level strategic objectives: Where do we want the society to be in a 5- to 10-year time frame?
  2. What obstacles exist for us to achieve these objectives? What opportunities are there to be had from/by overcoming these obstacles?
  3. Action items needed to overcome these obstacles and reach our objectives: these could be simpler, short term, low hanging fruit type, or more complex and more long-term action items.
The Committee met through email and a series of Teleconferences.  Every committee member provided a top-three list of their suggestions of high- level strategic objectives, which were consolidated and sent around for consideration from the committee. Telecons were held on:
  1. 11/15/19 – Focused on high level strategic objectives
  2. 11/27/19 – Review of notes from meeting one and start discussion of obstacles and opportunities
  3. 12/18/19 – Focused on obstacles and opportunities
  4. 1/13/20 – Focused on Actions and wrap up.
The final presentation, in preparation for discussion at the IMAC Executive Board meeting, was revised by email.

The committee began by establishing supporting assumptions to help guide the discussion and to answer the objectives given by President John Lambros.  The committee then developed a list of four high level strategic objectives in order to answer the question, “Where do we want the society to be in a 5- to 10-year time frame?”

In summary, the SEM Strategic Planning Committee proposes that the four interlinking high-level objectives listed below stand on their own:
  1. SEM is an inclusive society serving the needs of a diverse participant base.  Therefore, we must continue to advance and reinvigorate industry participation in SEM Annual and IMAC conferences.
  2. SEM values and cultivates the next generation of mechanicians.  Therefore, we must continue to  enhance student and early career engagement.
  3. SEM drives the state of the art within and beyond the field of mechanics. Therefore,  we need to implement mechanisms for timely inclusion of hot new topics into SEM conferences and journals.
  4. SEM is healthy and has the data to back it up.  However, SEM needs to develop metrics for measuring the health of SEM conference participation with a focus on pipeline.
