Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)

The SEM Educational Foundation participates in the Intel ISEF as one means to fulfill its mission to provide financial support for a variety of educational activities important to the development of the field of experimental mechanicsĀ. We hope that our participation will encourage students to continue their education in engineering and lead them to productive and exciting careers.

All presentations submitted to the event are culled and reviewed by SEM judges to determine if they are related to the field of Experimental Mechanics. Of the EM related presentations, the ranking of 1, 2 and 3 is determined by the SEM judges. A certificate and cash prize is presented to the top three winners.

2017 Recipients
First Award - $2,500
The student combined silicone rubber and graphene nanoflakes to develop a low cost, high sensitivity motion sensor for seismic events. Load-deformation testing was performed to find the optimum rubber-graphene ratio.

Second Award - $1,500
The student wanted to create better body armor by testing different weave patterns of Kevlar. Ballistic testing was performed using a bb gun. Performance was enhanced with the addition of shear thickening fluid to the weave. The hexagonal weave was found to be better than the square weave.

Third Award - $1,000
The student developed a bone-bioglass material for medical implants. Tensile strength and biocompatibility were determined through testing.
