M. Hetényi

(formerly the Experimental Techniques “Outstanding Paper” Award)

 

This award was established in 1967 for the best research paper published in Experimental Mechanics. It was named in honor of Dr. Miklos Hetényi. A brief biography and an abridged list of Dr. Hetényi’s professional accomplishments follow:

Education:
University of Technical Sciences, Budapest, Hungary, 1924-30; Diploma in Civil Engineering, 1931; Graduate work with H.M. Westerguard, Univ. of Illinois, 1934-35 and with S.P. Timoshenko, Univ. of Michigan, 1935-36; PhD in Eng. Mechanics, 1936.

Publications:
Author of over 70 scientific papers on analytical and experimental mechanics and on the theory of structures; Beams on Elastic Foundations, Univ. of Michigan, 1946; Coeditor of Proc. of the Tenth International Congress on Applied Mechanics, Springer Ed., 1969.

Contributions to SEM:
1 of 4 founders, 1943; Vice President, 1943-44; 2nd President, 1944-45; Editor, Handbook of Experimental Stress Analysis, 1950.

General Contributions:

Owen Kingstedt
Owen Kingstedt completed his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University before pursing his M.S. and PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, Owen is an assistant professor at the University of Utah in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Owen’s main research interests are in the mechanics of materials for use in extreme environments with a specific focus on next generation light weight structural materials for dynamic applications.


John Lambros
Prof. Lambros received a B.Eng. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology of the University of London in 1988, an M.S. degree in Aeronautics from Caltech in 1989, and a Ph.D. degree also in Aeronautics from Caltech in 1994. After a year as a postdoctoral researcher, he joined the Mechanical Engineering department of the University of Delaware as an Assistant Professor in 1995 and moved to the Aerospace Engineering department of the University of Illinois in 2000, where he is currently a Professor. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society for Experimental Mechanics, and the American Academy of Mechanics. He has served as an Associate Editor for Experimental Mechanics (1999-2005) and the ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics (2011-2014). He has also served on the Executive Board of the SEM (2008-2010) and recently completed one term as Associated Head for Graduate Studies in the Aerospace Engineering Department at Illinois (2011-2016). Over his 20-year career he has received numerous honors and awards for both research and teaching achievements including an NSF CAREER Award (1999), the SEM Hetényi (2012) and Frocht (2015) Awards, and the UIUC Campus Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching (2015).
