D. R. Harting
Darrell R. Harting, a 37-year SEM member and one of Experimental Techniques founders, passed away in 1996. In recognition of his considerable contributions to SEM as a member, as its President in 1977-1978, as Fellow in 1983, and as an early proponent of Experimental Techniques, the SEM Honors Committee recommended, and the Executive Board approved, that the E/T Outstanding Paper Award be renamed the D.R. Harting Award.This award was formally established in 1987 by the Executive Board. However, the award was first presented in 1981, when Experimental Techniques started publication on a regular basis. The award, consisting of a plaque, is presented at SEM’s Spring Conference. Candidates are nominated by E/T reviewers who cite papers they consider worthy of “Outstanding Paper” status. In January of the year, the E/T Senior Technical Editor prepares a list of nominated papers. Subsequently, all pertinent information is submitted to the Honors Committee for the final selection.
For the outstanding paper entitled “In-Situ Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope Observations of Colloidal Failure Mechanisms using the Brazilian Disk Test” published in Experimental Techniques in 2015 (39:12-18, 2015)
Dr Kalin Ivanov Dragnevski obtained his MSc from the University of Chemical Technology & Metallurgy, Sofia, Bulgaria and his PhD from the Institute of Materials at Leeds University. Following a short spell in industry, he took a research position in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, where he worked on developing new methodologies for studying dynamic processes using advanced Microscopy techniques. He is now in a research & management post in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, where he established & runs the Laboratory for In-situ Microscopy & Analysis (LIMA).
Omar Islam graduated from Oxford University in 2011 having read Engineering Science. During his undergraduate years, he specialised in mechanical and civil engineering disciplines. His final year research project focussed on experimental techniques for structural and mechanical characterisation of materials in-situ in the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope, and led to three publications, including this paper in Experimental Techniques. After graduating from Oxford, Omar went on to work for UK automotive firm, Jaguar Land Rover. Here he developed chassis structures and systems before becoming Senior Architecture Engineer for the future Range Rover Sport programme.
Clive Siviour completed his undergraduate degree in Physics at the University of Cambridge in 2001, where he remained to complete his doctoral thesis, High strain rate properties of materials using Hopkinson bar techniques. In 2005, he moved to the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford, initially as a ‘Career Development Fellow’ before taking up an Associate Professorship in 2008. His main interest is characterisation of materials under dynamic loading, in particular the use of time-temperature superposition to validate and replicate the response of polymers to high rate deformation using quasi-static experiments, and deriving and interpreting quantitative measurements from high -speed photography.
