Overview
The purpose of the Technical Division on Composite, Hybrid and Multifunctional Materials is to provide technical benefit to its members by:

  • Providing a forum for exchange of information on composites
  • Advancing composite technology through timely exchange and dissemination of information
  • Planning and coordinating the activities of the Society related to composite, hybrid, and multifunctional materials in cooperation and coordination with others
  • Assisting in the promotion of uniform terminology in composite documentation
  • Providing improved technical interaction between scientists, engineers, manufacturers and users of composites
  • Promoting and/or organizing special sessions, symposia, short courses, workshops, manuals or monographs
  • Interacting, assisting and cooperating with other committees, societies, associations or organizations on the topic of composites

International Symposium on the Mechanics of Composite and Multifunctional Materials
Composites and multifunctional materials continue to revolutionize industrial applications due to superior structural performance, light weight and ability to tailor multiple functional properties. This symposium presents papers related to the novel methods of manufacturing, testing, and modelling of composites. A major goal of this symposium is to promote the development of new experimental techniques to address real-life applications and provide a platform for collaboration. Session topics include:

Recent Activities
Overview
The Composite, Hybrid, and Multifunctional Materials Technical Division has continued to grow. The division introduced a dedicated symposium in 2015 and will continue its symposium for the third year at the 2017 SEM annual conference. A number of new topic areas are being actively pursued. The division plans to continue to grow its membership and participation to match the growing interest in this area of research and development.

Activities in 2016
The division organized its second International Symposium on the Mechanics of Composite and Multifunctional Materials for the 2016 SEM Annual Conference. The symposium consisted of eleven sessions with 52 presentations, including two sessions jointly organized with the Fracture and Fatigue Division. One particular highlight of 2016’s symposium was a three-session series on recycled-constituent composites, organized by division members Emin Bayraktar and Ibrahim Miskioglu, which signifies a vibrant new topic of research and development. The participation of members in TD meetings, session organization and session participation has steadily increased. In 2016, there were 32 members in attendance at the TD committee meeting and new officers were elected for the 2017-2019 term.

Activities in 2015
The division organized the first International Symposium on the Mechanics of Composite and Multifunctional Materials for the 2015 SEM Annual Conference. Ten sessions consisting of 48 presentations were organized in the Symposium including one collaborative session with Fracture and Fatigue TD. Three keynote addresses were organized, by Prof. Greg Carman of UCLA, Dr. James Thomas of the Naval Research Lab, and Prof. Scott White of the University of Illinois. Active membership in the TD grew to 24, out of which 15 volunteered as session organizers.

Activities in 2013 and 2014
Eight sessions, consisting of 45 papers, were organized for the 2013 annual conference: Failure Behavior of Polymer Matrix Composites, Microvascular and Natural Composites, Nanocomposites for Multifunctional Performance, Composite/Hybrid Characterization Using Digital Image Correlation I and II, Joints/Bonded Composites, Non-Destructive Testing of Composites, and Composite Test Methods. Several of these sessions were organized in collaboration with the MEMs and Biological Systems technical divisions. At least 19 conference attendees participated in the TD lunch meeting (the same as in 2012), 10 of which have been involved in organizing sessions for 2014.

Collaborations with other divisions continued for 2014. Sessions were co-organized with the MEMs and Biological Systems divisions for the 2014 annual conference, including Novel/Bio Composites and Nanocomposites. Other sessions included: Composites for Energy Applications, NDE of Composites, Mechanical Testing of Composites, Digital Image Correlation for Composites I and II, and Particulate Composites. A keynote presentation on additive manufacturing was given by Ralph Dinwiddie of Oak Ridge National Lab. A total of eight sessions and 35 papers were planned for 2014. Overall, interest in the TD remained strong, and participation in TD organization increased in 2014. New officers for the TD were elected at the 2014 annual meeting, as the present officers completed their terms.
