MODEL VALIDATION & UNCERTAINTY QUANTIFICATION

The purpose of the Technical Division on Model Validation and Uncertainty Quantification (MV&UQ) shall be to provide maximum technical benefits to its members by:

  • Promoting the advancement and understanding of MV&UQ theory and methods by providing a forum for the exchange of information on MV&UQ theory, methods, applications, and related activities.
  • Promoting “best practices” in the areas of experimental testing and validated simulations through the use of MV&UQ methods.
  • Providing educational opportunities to promote the understanding and use of proven MV&UQ methods.
  • Whenever possible, promoting the exchange of information and coordinating MV&UQ related activities with other technical or professional societies.

MODEL VALIDATION AND UNCERTAINTY QUANTIFICATION DIVISION - Updated May 2007

The MVUQ technical division expanded its activities somewhat during this year, relative to the period 2005-2006. Highlights include sessions developed at the IMAC and SEM Annual Conference; developing a one-day pre-IMAC short-course; and renewing the TD officers.

The charter of the MVUQ TD is to promote Verification and Validation (V&V) related activities within the SEM at a time when modeling and simulation plays an ever increasing role in sciences and engineering. Confidence in computational models and their predictions stems from V&V activities such as the design of validation experiments; advanced instrumentation; test-analysis correlation; statistical analysis of data sets; and the quantification of uncertainty and its effects on predictions.

At IMAC-XXV, the TD contributed to the development of seven sessions (or about 35 papers) dedicated to V&V and uncertainty quantification in Structural Dynamics entitled: “Representations of uncertainty;” “Uncertainty applications and methods;” “Experimental approaches for uncertainty quantification;” “Model validation applications, I and II;” “Model validation methods;” and “Model validation practice.” At the SEM Annual Conference, the TD contributed two sessions (or 11 papers) entitled: “Model validation of a jointed/foamed system;” and “Model validation and uncertainty quantification.”

A one-day short-course on V&V was developed and taught by five instructors (J. Cafeo, F. Hemez, R. Mayes, R. Rebba, and T. Simmermacher) before IMAC-XXV, to fulfill the TD’s educational role. Techniques for and applications of code and solution verification, statistical analysis, uncertainty quantification, the definition of validation metrics, test-analysis correlation and finite element model updating were overviewed. A total of 27 attendees took the short-course. Feed-back was overall excellent and a similar short-course will most likely be repeated at future IMAC or other SEM conferences.

The third annual TD meeting was held at IMAC-XXV on February 21, 2007 with 18 attending. Elections were held to renew the TD officers; the list of current officers is shown above. The TD discussed the development of sessions and short-courses at future IMAC and SEM Annual Conferences; expansion of the website; and the creation of an “Outstanding MVUQ Paper Award” at future IMAC meetings.
