EDUCATION COMMITTEE: 2007 OBJECTIVES
I. Objectives:
Continue to Market and Grow the Society for Experimental Mechanics in the areas of EM/ET Education and Training. Use EM/ET Publications including journals, proceedings, books, monographs, vendor partnerships and classroom materials to Market SEM. Monitor growth via New Membership, increased Meeting Participation, the SEM Student Paper Competition, the ET Education Feature Series, increased ET Advertising, Tutorials, co-sponsored TD’s, and Conference Sessions.
II. Outcomes and Subject Areas (2006):
Chaired a ½ day Vendor Session (this marked the 4th year for the session, which was increased to a ½ day from a ¼ day session based on positive feedback and interest). The intent is to create a forum for the vendors to share their expertise in both applying and operating equipment that they are showing in the Exhibits Hall and allow for a comprehensive Q&A segment of the session to exchange information. This action will take the involvement of the vendors in the growth of the society to a new level and should encourage additional exhibitors, and advertising revenue.
Supported the Student Paper Competition (winning papers are peer reviewed and submitted for publication in ET)
III. Subject Areas Planned (2007):
Chair a ½ day Vendor Session. Co-Sponsor with Applications - The presentations will include a Q&A segment for 50% of the session.
IV. Other Initiatives Moving Forward into 2007
Stay aligned with ET Feature Series with Education Focus
Suggested Focus Areas for 2007
Work with HQ to Fully Leverage Updated SEM Website:
- Content of a Website ‘Corner’ could use interactive teaching materials for use directly in the classroom via internet downlinks.
- Membership number required.
- Link SEM website to Student Chapter Site
- Potential revenue stream from:
- Sponsors
- Organizations
- Non-Members (the site will have a button to sign up as a member)
Pursue Back to Basics monographs (Modal and Optical Methods)
Education to work on creating a Speakers list:
- List of SEM members willing to speak at Universities, Industry, etc on issues concerning EM.
- List to leverage ASME, AIAA, other student chapter activities – target graduate students, though open idea of recruiting undergrads as well.
- List to promote Professorial and student involvement in SEM and related EM activities
- Use ET and EM as platforms to discuss EM.
- Would it be helpful to create a canned SEM/EM presentation package?
- SEM HQ to assist in facilitating SEM speakers List at various activities globally. Choose speakers co-located with activity.
Package Case Studies from presentations given at IMAC/Annual meeting on SEM website (e.g. Model Validation-Trillion)
Are we becoming known as the Digital Image Correlation Society? If so, how can we leverage DIC? Maybe our new publishers of EM and ET can help us understand our audiences better.
Education should sponsor a timeline of EM history…from foil strain gages to DIC/Moire/etc…
Additional thoughts regarding SEM Student Membership: Work on innovative approaches for events to welcome our student attendees and members.
- Open to all new attendees especially the students
- Meet the SEM Board members
- Give a brief overview of SEM – its mission and members
