ZANDMAN AWARD

In May, 1989 the SEM Executive Board formally established the Felix Zandman Award. The award honors Dr. Zandman for his extensive work with photoelastic coatings and his support of SEM. The recipient receives an award plaque. Also, a donation is given in the recipient's name to the SEM Education Foundation.

The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of measurements or applications utilizing photoelastic coatings. The selection will be based upon the best paper published by SEM or any other recognized journal which publishes photoelastic coatings papers. Alternatively, a person who may not have published an outstanding paper, but has distinguished him or herself in other ways in the use of photoelastic coatings may also be nominated. The first recipient to be recognized in 1990 was Alex S. Redner.

2008 F. Zandman Award: Michel Taroni

Dr. Michel, Robert TARONI  obtained his Engineer diploma  from CNAM Engineer School (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers) of PARIS (1974).  He joined Snecma in 1967 (Société Nationale d’Etude et de Construction de Moteurs d’Aviation) now SAFRAN Group.  Initially, he worked in the Metallurgical Laboratory as part of the Photoelastic team.  In 1983, he became Manager of the Stress Analysis Laboratory.  Since then, he has been an Expert in Stress Analysis at Snecma and in the wider group, responsible for the development and application  of experimental mechanics methods in support of the activities of the Design office in order to correlate Finite Elements Calculations used to improve the life cycle of critical engine parts.  He has throughout his career in applied mechanics extensively used experimental techniques such as electrical strain gages, 3D photoelasticity, Photostress, Stereolithography, and other optical methods.

He is a member of the board of GAMAC in France (Group for Advance of Stress Analysis Method) and a member of SFM (Society of French Mechanics).  He co- organized in 1995 and 1998 in Paris Photomechanics Congresses on the development of optical method applied to the mechanics.  He is the author and co- author of many papers published in internally and in international journals.

He was awarded in 1999 a special expert prize at SNECMA in recognition of his career and his contribution to the development and utilization of numerical reflection photoelasticity by fringe image processing.
